Blackjack is the best known and most popular table game in the casino gaming industry, both at brick and mortar casinos and online casinos. Dating back to at least the 1600′s, when references to the game of twenty-one can be found, to this day, blackjack is a popular casino game because of its combination of skill and chance – with most serious players putting an emphasis on the element of skill.

Blackjack Game Objective & Rules

In the game of blackjack, each card has a numerical value. Cards of a certain number have an identical value, while face cards – jack, queen, and king – have a value of 10. Aces can have a value of either one or 11, whichever is most beneficial to the players hand.

The player starts with two cards and can “hit” the hand to receive another card, or “stand” to keep the current hand total. The goal is to get a hand total that is higher than the dealer but without going over 21. Going over 21 is “busting” and is an automatic loss.

As the player makes decisions on his or her hand, the dealer will hold two cards (dealt at the start of the game), one card facing up – the face card – and the other facing down – the hole card.

Aside from hitting or standing, players have the option to double down, which is to double the bet amount (followed by one additional “hit”), to split a pair – which also requires doubling the bet – or taking Insurance (an additional wager that the dealer has a Blackjack – permitted if the dealer is showing an Ace).

In some versions of Blackjack, players are afforded the opportunity of “Surrendering” (in effect returning half of the original bet back to the player) when the dealer’s facecard is a ten or Ace. If the player is permitted to surrender before the dealer checks the hole card, this is called early surrender. If the player is not given the option of surrendering until after the dealer checks for Blackjack, this is called late surrender.

Strategy & Odds

Because the player does not know the value of the dealer’s hold card, a calculated guess best serves the player’s chances of winning, and hence the reason blackjack is a game of strategy and chance.

The strategy for blackjack comes in knowing one’s odds of busting with a particular hand in relation to the dealer’s odds of busting (which is based on the value of the dealer’s face card). Blackjack basic strategy informs players when to hit, when to double a bet, split hands, take insurance – essentially, every move in every possible hand situation. Consulting a color-coded strategy chart is the easiest way to learn and put this time-tested strategy to practice.

At live blackjack tables, drawn cards are determined by the shuffling of the deck(s), ensuring that all cards are drawn at random. No one knows what card will be next, though card counters can sometimes form an educated guess (contingent on the use of card shufflers). With online blackjack, the card that is drawn is determined by a computer program called a random number generator (RNG), which randomly selects cards to be dealt to the dealer and player. Since spent cards are automatically shuffled back into the deck, card counting is not as effective online.

In addition to the standard game of blackjack, online casinos often offer blackjack variants that take advantage of side bets – such as Perfect Pairs – which give the player an extra opportunity to make money on the blackjack hand, but offer odds that are not as favorable as a standard game.

Other factors that influence odds in games of blackjack are the number of decks used (less is better), whether or not the dealer must hit or stand on Soft 17 (standing is more advantageous for the player), allowing doubling down after splitting a hand (lowers the Edge, but rarely offered), allowing additional hits on or the re-splitting of a pair of Aces (advantageous for the player), and the allowance of Surrender (lowers the edge if taken advantage of in accordance with mathematical strategy).

Blackjack Games

Online casinos often have a large selection of blackjack games, including traditional games (Vegas Strip, Vegas Downtown, European, Atlantic City), the aforementioned side bet games (Perfect Pairs), popular variants (Double Exposure, Blackjack Switch, Pontoon and Super Fun 21) and tournament games – the latter providing a more competitive type of gaming in which players compete for guaranteed cash prizes when paying a small entry fee.

Another way that online casinos entice fans of Blackjack to open real money accounts is by offering Blackjack bonuses. Second in popularity only to slots bonuses, Blackjack bonuses provide players with a padded bankroll that can be strategically used to get through losing streaks, and ultimately, into a winning streak at the Blackjack table.
